Have you ever watched a science fiction movie, and wondered whether the plot could actually take place in the real world. Well, as per scientists we may experience such an event soon.

The sun has released a massive solar storm which could hit Earth today, possibly causing blackouts and a powerful solar storm.

Solar storms have always worried scientists, as such an event could possibly have major repercussions on our planet. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had raised an alert regarding a solar flare, which erupted from the Sun on June 14.

As per space researchers, after the solar flare hits the Earth, it could be strong enough to cause a radio blackout close to the poles and other prone areas. For the unversed, the alert regarding the potential solar storm was posted by a physicist named Dr Tamitha Skov on social media.

Dr. Tamitha Skov said “The long snake-like filament cartwheeled its way off the Sun in a stunning ballet. The magnetic orientation of this Earth-directed solar storm is going to be tough to predict. G2-level (possibly G3) conditions may occur if the magnetic field of this storm is oriented southward!”

As per the space expert, the solar flare could lead to potential blackouts across the world on July 18, which is today.

The solar flare is speculated to be of of G-3 magnitude. While it is not expected to do any serious damage, the solar flare could possibly generate northern lights in some regions of the earth.

For the unversed, a solar flare is said to be an intense localized eruption of electromagnetic radiation in the Sun’s atmosphere. A solar flare is classified into five major categories – A, B, C, M, and X – with X being the one with the highest intensity.
